The movie begins with the birth of Ryle. From darkness, the emotion Joy enters the headquarters of Ryle’s mind, followed over time by Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. These emotions work together to manage daydreams, memories, feelings, assumptions, ideas, responses, and interpretations of events, with Joy taking the lead in coordinating them. Memories are balls, organized in columns, that reflect the emotions they represent: blue for Sadness, gold for Joy, red for Anger, purple for Fear, and green for Disgust. Core memories, formed from significant moments in Ryle’s life, are stored in a special chamber and influence different aspects of her personality. These core memories create various personality islands: ‘Goof Island’ symbolizes Ryle’s playful side, ‘Hockey Island’ symbolizes her love for hockey, ‘Honesty Island’ symbolizes her personality of maintaining honesty, ‘Friendship Island’ symbolizes her bond with her friend, and ‘Family Island’ symbolizes her relationship with her parents. Together, these personalities make Ryle who she is.

When she sleeps, the emotions are ‘out’ and they gather Ryle’s memory balls to 'long term' through a tube. Other aspects of Ryle’s mind include the Train of Thought, an actual train, Dream Production, which creates her dreams, and a maze of core memories, which houses memory balls. There are places responsible for dream production, subconscious, abstract thoughts, imagination, inductive reasoning, déjà vu, language processing, fears, and critical thinking. Workers in Ryle's mind remove unnecessary memories, discard abstract thoughts, promote coordination, and place people or things into the subconscious.

The plot begins when 11-year-old Ryle and her family move from Minnesota to San Francisco. Ryle is disappointed by the aesthetics of their new house but remains hopeful. Her situation worsens when the move-in truck is delayed, adding to the complexities of the transition. The next morning, Ryle starts at her new school, feeling both excited and nervous. During her introduction in class, she bravely speaks about her experiences in Minnesota until Sadness touches her memory ball. This causes her to become sad and cry, leading to embarrassment. A blue core memory forms from this experience, and Joy attempts to prevent it from creating an island by passing it through the long-term memory tube. A struggle ensues between Joy and Sadness, scattering all the core memory balls. In the chaos, one of the golden core memory balls starts getting sucked into the tube. As Joy tries to retrieve it, she, along with the other core memory balls, gets pulled into the tube. Sadness, being close by, is also sucked in. With the core memories absent from the chamber, the islands representing different aspects of Ryle’s personality lose their colors.

With Joy away, the remaining emotions struggle to make Ryle express happiness. Instead, Ryle shows only disgust, fear, and anger. As a result of the absence of Ryle’s core memory balls, her personality islands crumble into the ‘dump’, beginning with Goofball Island, followed by Friendship Island, Hockey Island, Honesty Island and Family Island. Sadness uses the manuals of the mind to guide Hope and her through the maze of long-term memories. Along the way, they meet Bing Bong, Ryle's imaginary friend, who is a mix of an elephant, cat, cotton candy, and dolphin. Bing Bong helps them navigate to headquarters, using the train of thought. During their journey, Bing Bong disappears at the ‘pit.’ The plan of using the train of thought fails, but Joy and Sadness successfully arrive at the headquarters. Meanwhile, under the control of the remaining emotions, Ryle quits hokey and decides to run to Minnesota. Joy and Sadness arrive at the headquarters just in time to stop her. Joy and Sadness attached the core memories to their chamber, and the islands were formed back. In the end, new islands are created with not only Hope memory balls. Old islands were expanded with multiple emotions.

Inside Out Season 1 movie highlights the dynamic nature of emotions and the significance of negative feelings. Fear keeps us safe, and sadness enhances our appreciation of positive experiences by contrasting them with moments of sorrow. The film illustrates how emotions influence our functioning, personality, and responses. It also delves into various mental processes controlled by the brain, such as language interpretation, memory, dreams, and thoughts. This movie is suitable for all ages and, unlike many other multi-age appropriate films, it contains no hidden vulgarities. It is both entertaining and wholesome. I give this movie a solid 10/10.
