What is a panic attack?

A panic attack involves intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms. It usually occurs within minutes, during which at least 4 or more of the following symptoms occur:

  1. Accelerated heart rate 

  2. Sweating

  3. Shaking/ trembling

  4. Shortness of breath

  5. Feelings of choking

  6. Nausea

  7. Feeling dizzy

  8. Chills or heat sensations

  9. Paresthesias

  10. Fear of losing control or "going crazy"

  11. Fear of dying

  12. Derealization (feeling detached from your surroundings) or depersonalization (feelings that you are watching yourself go through a situation)


A panic attack is not a diagnosis itself. Panic attack is not categorized as a mental disorder. It can occur with other mental disorders. It can happen out of the blue or predictably. Some people have panic attacks during sleep.
