Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by restriction in food intake, fear of weight gain, persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, and distorted body image. The individual maintains a body weight below a minimally normal level for age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health. The individual lacks recognition of the seriousness of their current low body weight. There are 2 types of Anorexia Nervosa:

  1. Restricting Type: Weight loss is accomplished through dieting, fasting, and/or excessive exercise.

  2. Binge-Eating/Purging Type: Weight loss is accomplished by self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas. It may involve binge eating followed by inducing vomiting.

Anorexia Nervosa is more common in females than males, with a female to male ratio of approximately 10:1.
