Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by restriction in food intake, fear of weight gain, persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, and distorted body image. The individual maintains a body weight below a minimally normal level for age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health. The individual lacks recognition of the seriousness of their current low body weight. There are 2 types of Anorexia Nervosa:
Restricting Type: Weight loss is accomplished through dieting, fasting, and/or excessive exercise.
Binge-Eating/Purging Type: Weight loss is accomplished by self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas. It may involve binge eating followed by inducing vomiting.
Anorexia Nervosa is more common in females than males, with a female to male ratio of approximately 10:1.
