What is dementia?

Dementia is an extreme deterioration in brain functioning. It involves aphasia, apraxia, agnosia, and/or impaired executive functioning.

  • Aphasia: Impairment in expressing and understanding written and spoken language.

  • Apraxia: Impairment in ability to carry out motor tasks.

  • Agnosia: Inability to recognize and identify objects, persons, or sounds.

  • Impairment in executive functioning: Impairment in the ability to plan, organize, and/or think abstractively.

Dementia is not a diagnosis in itself. It is a symptom of a medical/ clinical condition: stroke, head injury, brain tumor, substance abuse, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.
